Marshes and other wetlands are truly amazing places. They filter and purify water, prevent floods, and provide rich habitats for a diverse range of plants and animals. Wetlands need your support as they still face declines in number, size, and quality due to a range of human stressors, such as pollution and drainage. Many species that rely on wetlands have been affected and are in need of monitoring, protection, and recovery efforts.
MarshWatch is a free volunteer science training program. It teaches beginners and other keen naturalists the knowledge and skills needed to participate in some of our more advanced programs, especially the Marsh Monitoring Program. After participating in MarshWatch, you will be able to 1) identify common wetland birds and amphibians (mostly frogs) found in your local area, and 2) submit observations to Birds Canada’s open data platform, NatureCounts. This unique and rewarding program will help you conserve Canada’s most threatened ecosystems and the birds and other wildlife that depend on them.
We offer MarshWatch in different regions across the country, which we refer to as “editions.” MarshWatch consists of a series of interactive training webinars, and in some regions, it includes additional learning opportunities such as identifying wetland plants and in-person guided walks. Each webinar is recorded and made available online to help match everyone’s schedule and pace. We encourage you to visit wetlands in your area to practice your new skills. Please note that MarshWatch—Maritimes Edition is the only edition offered in French.
