Long Point Bird Observatory – Old Cut Research Station
Open during migration season, April-May and mid-August through October.
Experience migration monitoring in action as birds pass through one of the world’s most important stopover sites.
What you can expect:
- Watch researchers catch, band and release wild birds up close.
- Daily bird banding demonstrations (weather permitting) from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Preparing for a Day of Birding at Long Point
Whether you’re planning a short visit or a full day in the field, a little preparation can help you make the most of your time.
Start with the Long Point Birding Trail brochure, which highlights key sites across the region and provides a great introduction to the landscape and where to look for birds.
To see the species being observed in real time, check the Long Point Bird Observatory Sightings Board, where recent and notable bird sightings are shared throughout the season. It’s a great way to plan your visit around current activity and see what others are finding nearby.
Long Point: A Place of Global Importance
Long Point is one of Canada’s most important places for birds and a globally significant Key Biodiversity Area, supporting more than 250 documented bird species. Through Birds Canada’s long-term stewardship, the lands we care for at Long Point have been recognized as an Other Effective Conservation Measure (OECM), contributing to Canada’s goal of protecting 30% of lands and waters.
This recognition reflects the importance of protecting habitats that support birds, biodiversity, and healthy ecosystems for generations to come.
