The cover story of the Spring 2017 edition of BirdWatch Canada (No. 79) will transport you to the ‘land of living skies,’ where the first season of fieldwork for the Saskatchewan Breeding Bird Atlas is just beginning. In “Launching the Saskatchewan Breeding Bird Atlas: Citizen Science Takes Flight,” LeeAnn Latremouille and Dr. Kiel Drake introduce the project, the people behind it, and the compelling birds and habitats to be explored by volunteer atlassers. A second feature article highlights recent research on Western Sandpiper populations, conducted in collaboration with Bird Studies Canada, by David Hope and Dr. Ron Ydenberg of Simon Fraser University.
The Spring issue of our magazine also brings you program updates from Project FeederWatch, the Schoolyard Bird Blitz, and the Maritimes Marsh Monitoring Program. You will discover a promising Citizen Science project for kids in Québec that has received Baillie Fund support, and read about population trends from nearly 60 years of migration monitoring at Long Point Bird Observatory.
Published by Bird Studies Canada, BirdWatch Canada reports the latest results from our programs, and includes topical feature articles about the world of birds. By donating $35 or more annually, members and supporters provide valuable funding for bird research and conservation, and receive a subscription to our magazine, free participation in any of our Citizen Science programs, and a charitable tax receipt for the full amount of the contribution.
