You don’t have to live in British Columbia to take part in our bird festival, Welcome Back the Winter Birds of Delta. Join us for a virtual celebration of our feathery friends on October 3 through 10!
We have an exciting line-up of online events this year, including a bird film screening, a rendezvous with rescued raptors, and a kids’ biodiversity collage contest. For those who live in the Greater Vancouver Area, we are also delivering a series of in-person bird walks for the LGBTQ+ community, women, birders of colour, Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, and youth. “The Future of Birds”: Film screening and Q&A with local filmmaker Jocelyn Demers

Join us for a film screening of “The Future of Birds”, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker himself! This locally produced documentary features footage and experts from around the Fraser Estuary. “With the loss of global biodiversity and climate change in mind, the world’s best ornithologists are understanding how important birds are for ecosystems and economies. In this documentary, you will discover recent research conclusions with scientists and ornithologists from around the planet. You will share the passion and the love of birders and admire the most elegant and mobile creatures of the natural world.” This event is supported by the City of Delta.
Jocelyn Demers is an independent producer and the owner of MONDE FILMS. His documentaries have a presence in more than 100 Universities and Colleges, and he has directed, written, and edited 6 documentaries about sustainability.
Meet the rescued raptors at Delta’s OWL Rehab
OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society
Join OWL to learn about the amazing species of raptors that call British Columbia home, the features and adaptations that make them unique, and about the dangers they face and how you can help. You also get the chance to meet some of OWL’s Raptor Ambassadors up close on camera! This unique opportunity can be viewed from the comfort of your own home.
Rights of passage: A conversation with artists and naturalists
Participants: Lou Sheppard, Emily Neufeld, Laiwan, Rob Butler, and Sharon MacGougan Panel presentation led by Shaun Dacey and Caroline Biel. Saturday October 10, 1pm
Rights of Passage, an interactive set of walks by artist Lou Sheppard follows lost or hidden streams/waterways in the developed urban environment of Richmond/Steveston. This work prompts us to consider from both a historic and contemporary perspective the human and non-human right of passage to these waterways. In Celebration of Vancouver Bird Week, Richmond Art Gallery in partnership with Birds Canada hosts an online conversation between artists and naturalists exploring ecology, politics of use, history of place, and water in the delta landscape of the Lower Mainland. Artists Lou Sheppard, Laiwan and Emily Neufeld will each share projects that engage the natural world alongside presentations by naturalists Rob Butler, and Sharon MacGougan.

Kids’ Biodiversity Collage Contest

Do you enjoy making art or taking photos of wildlife? If so, this contest may be for you! For this challenge, make a collage celebrating the birds that live in your area.
A collage is a work of art made by gluing pieces of different materials to a flat surface. Your collage can be made up of drawings and paintings you’ve made, or photos that you’ve taken yourself. To submit your collage, take a photo of it and email it to Caroline at cbiel@birdscanada.org along with your first name, age, and home town. The prize will be a guided bird tour with Birds Canada combined with a visit to a professional artist studio. Top entries will also be featured on our Fraser Delta social media pages. Only one entry per person. Open to kids aged 13 and under in the Greater Vancouver Area.

Come birding with us: Guided bird walks for diverse communities
Coordinated by Andrew Huang from Canadian Wildlife Service and Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture
For those who live the Greater Vancouver Area, we are delivering a series of in-person bird walks for the LGBTQ+ community, women, birders of colour, Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, and youth. Each guided walk is capped at 6 participants and will follow Covid-19 social distancing guidelines. Sanitized binoculars will be available for use. Come birding with us!
