As the seasons change and days grow shorter, winter birds animate quiet landscapes. Red-breasted Nuthatches call from the spruce trees with their distinctive aaank, aaank vocalizations, Dark-eyed Juncos scratch at the fresh snow, and Downy Woodpeckers spiral up trunks drumming as they go. These small winter wonders remind us of the joy birds bring, and of the role we all play in keeping them strong.

Across Canada, people are working together to help winter birds thrive. Through programs like Project FeederWatch, the Christmas Bird Count, the Great Backyard Bird Count and more, volunteers track birds and share their observations. Their efforts guide research, shape conservation action, and strengthen our connection to the natural world.

Alison, a Birds Canada volunteer and supporter, has felt that connection firsthand. She’s welcomed windy winter mornings along the Pacific Coast for the BC Coastal Waterbird Survey, helped identify ducks while young sea lions splashed nearby at Porteau Cove Provincial Park, and hiked in the dark through Whistler’s forests to look for elusive Black Swifts at dawn. While the sun rose, she sat by a stunning waterfall she had never seen before.

“I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, this is a provincial park I pass by all the time.’ Volunteering with Birds Canada has compelled me to get out and see things I wouldn’t have on my own,” she says.

Inspired by these experiences, Alison took her conservation journey further. In June, she joined Birds Canada for a tour of our work in the grasslands. There, she learned how landowners are restoring habitat through the Bird Friendliness Index, helping at-risk species like the Chestnut-collared Longspur. Seeing people come together to protect birds showed Alison the impact of her support and inspired her next step.

This Giving Tuesday, Alison is proud to join a group of generous donors who will match gifts to Birds Canada, dollar for dollar, doubling the impact of every contribution. Up to $72,500 in gifts will be matched!

“Giving a matching gift amplifies the difference we can make. If you donate $50, it immediately turns into $100. Why wouldn’t you?” Alison says.

Her motivation is simple: every matched donation helps birds thrive, and that, in turn, supports us all.

“Birds play such an essential role in the world’s ecosystem. Beyond helping species, you’re supporting seed dispersal, insect control, pollination, everything. Giving to Birds Canada is giving to the health of Canada’s biodiversity.”

This Giving Tuesday, join Alison and others in the power of collective action. Donate. Every dollar you give will be doubled, helping birds thrive through the winter and beyond.
