Each year, the global extinction risk to all bird species is assessed by BirdLife International, the official Red List Authority for birds for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The 2019 update was released in December 2019.
Volunteers and staff with the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Piping Plover Conservation Program survey over 50 beaches at regular intervals throughout the spring and summer each year. Together in 2019, we conducted over 600 beach surveys!
The 2019 season was not without its challenges for Piping Plover conservation in Ontario. High waters were an issue across the Great Lakes, leading to smaller nesting territories, and less beach overall for plover families and beachgoers to share.

The Long-billed Curlew project hit new heights this May with a very successful field season near Prince George, BC. A team from Bird Studies Canada visited the area to document the recently expanded range of these pioneer curlews, and to confirm their presence and breeding in the most northerly part of the species’ range.
