A number of recent technological advances are proving key to designing effective conservation solutions for birds. Included amongst these are information sharing platforms such as eBird, and new technologies such the Motus Wildlife Tracking System that Bird Studies Canada coordinates with partners across the Americas. It therefore seems highly appropriate that the organizers of the 37th Meeting of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists, to be held in Québec City from August 27-30, 2019, selected “Ornithology in the era of new technologies” as the conference theme.
Bird Studies Canada works closely with the Society of Canadian Ornithologists on a number of fronts and is proud to be one of the supporting partners of this event. Staff members Gregor Beck, Andrew Coughlan, Dr. Danielle Ethier, and Dr. Amy-Lee Kouwenberg will be attending the conference and are looking forward to meeting with the 150 delegates united to share information about and discuss topics that include the tracking of migratory birds, bird population monitoring, applying research results to conservation, and the implications of new technologies on future conservation planning and ornithology. Danielle and Amy-Lee will both be presenting and a number of other staff feature as co-authors on a range of communications.
We are particularly delighted that past recipients of Bird Studies Canada’s James L. Baillie Student Research Award, a scholarship funded through the Great Canadian Birdathon, also have a strong presence at the meeting, with a plenary talk from Dr. Kira Delmore, and presentations by Dr. Kyle Elliott, Dr. Stephanie LaZerte, and Dr. Heather Major. In addition, Dr. Bradley Fedy, Dr. Daniel Mennill, Dr. Matthew Reudink, and Dr. Karen Wiebe appear as co-authors.
The meeting will be preceded by a gathering of the International Bicknell’s Thrush Conservation Group and a workshop on the use of bioacoustics as a valuable research tool.
If you are going to be present, please come and meet us at our kiosk. Otherwise, please stay tuned to Bird Studies Canada’s blog and social media channels for updates from the meeting!
