Media Release
March 31, 2026
Today, Prime Minister Carney announced $3.8 billion in new funding and renewed programs to protect nature. Programs that can help conserve the places birds need to thrive and reduce the threats causing their decline. The announcement sets out key actions to advance several targets in Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy, in particular the goal to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030 and the goal to take urgent action to recover species at risk.
The announcement includes dedicated, long-term funding for Indigenous-led conservation and Indigenous Guardian programs that benefit Indigenous communities and help conserve important places for birds and monitor their populations and threats.
Birds Canada will be working to engage our collaborators and supporters in ensuring new protected or conserved areas target important areas for birds on land and at sea. We will look to continue our work to protect and restore Priority Places for species at risk. In addition, we will continue to push for the conservation of Key Biodiversity Areas for birds and other species. Currently most KBAs have less than 10% of their area protected or conserved and would benefit from long-term conservation.
The Prime Minister’s announcement is a significant step forward for nature conservation and we look forward to acting together to protect the beauty and diversity of Canada’s birds and the places they need to thrive.
