St. Andrew's Bird Banding Station
The St. Andrew's Banding Station
is located on grounds owned by the Huntsman Marine Science Centre just
outside the town of St.Andrews-by-the-Sea. Standardized passerine
banding began in 1989 and since then over 13,200 birds of 90 species
have been banded. The Station's fourteen mist nets are located in second
growth habitat adjacent to the St. Croix Estuary and the important bird
areas of Passamaquoddy Bay. The field season runs from May until the end
of October.
While the spring migration is slow on coast, data collected
about the fall migration are contributed to BSC's Canadian Migration
Monitoring Network. The Station also contributes summer data to the
Institute of Bird Populations' MAPS program (Monitoring Avian
Productivity and Survivourship), and swallow boxes. Results are posted
on the
website.
Dormitory and apartment
facilities are available through the Huntsman Marine Science Centre for
visiting banders and researchers.
