September is here and an exciting migration is underway – for birds, and for students headed back to class! Did you know that a diverse array of Canada’s bird species can be found in schoolyards across the country? As we wave goodbye to summer, many birds depart, leaving behind those that feast on stored food and winter’s offerings. Early spring will trigger a new movement of migrating birds that stop over to fuel up before reaching nesting sites and settling in for the summer. Before long, a new generation of birds will take flight in the fall. We can observe these life cycle changes throughout the school year, taking advantage of exciting place-based learning opportunities that bring nature into the classroom, and the classroom outside into nature.
Bird Studies Canada’s Bird Education programs shift with the seasons, and are timed with happenings in the bird world. They offer students opportunities to build awareness of local bird life, participate in meaningful Citizen Science, and be active stewards for bird conservation at home and school. Take a look at the many ways to bring birds and bird science to your classroom and curriculum:

CONNECT:
Join the conversation and connect with a network of bird educators by following our new education account on Twitter: @BSC_Education. Email us at education@birdscanada.org for more information on bird programs at your school.

LEARN:
Take your students on a virtual field trip or bring an interactive lesson to your classroom via our Virtual Ornithology distance education program. Stay tuned for the Migration Education resource package (coming this fall) to learn about bird migration, and current research and technology used to study bird movements.

PARTICIPATE:
Be a scientist and contribute your observations through bird-focused programs for Citizen Science at School: Project FeederWatch, Christmas Bird Count for Kids, Great Backyard Bird Count, Project NestWatch, and Schoolyard Bird Blitz!

CONSERVE:
How can you help birds? Visit our Top 6 Ways You Can Help Birds page to learn how you can be stewards for birds at school.
These bird education programs are made possible by the generous support of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Ontario Trillium Foundation, NSERC PromoScience, The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, and Armstrong Bird Food.
