20 March 2019 (Port Rowan, ON)
Bird Studies Canada welcomes the 2019 federal budget as it continues Canada’s commitment to fighting climate change by investing in green infrastructure, electric vehicles and energy efficiency of buildings. Notably, it also promotes initiatives to reduce food waste as part of Canada’s first National Food Policy. Food waste alone is responsible for 8% of global GHG emissions.
“Climate change is a severe threat itself to biodiversity, and also an accelerator of other threats to species and habitats,” says Steven Price, President of Bird Studies Canada.  “We must turn the corner on this issue, this decade, if birds – and the natural systems on which all life depends – are to survive and thrive.”
Another noteworthy initiative is the pledged support to work with the Government of Nunavut and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association to explore options to protect the High Arctic Basin.
Bird Studies Canada is one of the 22 members of the Green Budget Coalition, which makes a consolidated annual set of recommendations to the federal government regarding strategic fiscal and budgetary opportunities. Some key recommendations of the Green Budget Coalition, which were not reflected in the 2019 budget, were the regulation of pesticides and other toxic substances and an increased investment in sustainable agriculture.
