Until November 1, the Newfoundland and Labrador Murre Conservation Fund is accepting applications for projects to be carried out in 2018-19. Co-managed by Bird Studies Canada and Wildlife Habitat Canada, the Murre Conservation Fund supports projects that promote the conservation of Common and Thick-billed murres and their habitats in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Murre Fund supported two projects in 2017-18. Dr. Kyle Elliott from McGill University is studying murres in the Arctic (Coats Island, Nunavut), linking year-round activity and energy budgets with location to determine what time periods are critical for murre foraging success and survival during the non-breeding season. Dr. Mark Mallory from Acadia University is conducting colony monitoring and GPS tracking at the Gannet Islands, Labrador, to determine key foraging areas, and to provide information on how far birds move during critical periods when they are energetically-stressed and potentially susceptible to environmental threats. Learn more about previously-funded projects.
To be eligible to receive a Murre Conservation Fund grant, the project must meet the criteria for current priority program areas. Applicants must submit an application to Dr. Laura Tranquilla at ltranquilla@birdscanada.org no later than November 1, 2017. The eligibility guidelines and application form are available here.
Did you know that these and other conservation grants are funded through sales of the Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp? Find out more at Wildlife Habitat Canada.
