Each year, Toronto supports millions of birds. About 200 bird species breed in Toronto; roughly 320 species have been seen in the city. Two major migratory routes, the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways, converge here, resulting in an above-average concentration of migrating birds.
Bird Studies Canada launched our first urban bird program in Toronto in 2011. Initially, the focus was on introducing Torontonians to our national programs, such as Project FeederWatch and the Great Backyard Bird Count. The program has since grown to include efforts specifically aimed at urban birds and people.
You can participate in several Citizen Science programs and outreach events in Toronto, including the Summer Bird Count and surveys for Eastern Screech-Owls and Common Nighthawks.
