For nearly four decades now, Bird
Studies Canada, formerly known as Long Point Bird Observatory, has marshalled thousands of
volunteers for bird studies. Beginning as a simple bird banding station on Long Point,
Lake Erie, BSC now conducts local, regional, national and international programs in
support of bird conservation. Each year, about 10,000 people make donations in support of
our programs and nearly 20,000 volunteers actively participate in our research and
education activities. With the help of 17 full-time staff, our supporters and volunteers
have made BSC a thriving, dynamic organization known around the world for its
well-designed, participatory, effective and enriching conservation programs.
BSC has outgrown its current office facilities. We propose to construct a new, permanent
Headquarters and National Research Centre for the organization and to acquire additional
habitat, critical for migratory birds, at the base of Long Point. The Headquarters and
National Research Centre will provide essential education and research facilities for
staff and volunteers, provide flexible meeting areas for supporters, conserve and restore
a valuable natural area, and provide public access for visitors wishing to explore the
area's natural assets.
