Back in 1999, the Board of Directors of Bird Studies
Canada adopted a strategic plan to focus the development of BSC under over a
5-year period. The plan organized BSC's development under 4 strategic
intents: developing effective national and regional programs covering all
bird species; playing a constructive role in collaborative arrangements for
bird conservation across Canada and internationally; creating a National
Centre for Bird Studies at Long Point, Ontario; and developing BSC's
capacity to generate funds to achieve its vision and mission.
For the 2000 calendar year, the Board approved an ambitious operating plan
to move the organization forward to reaching its strategic intents.
Objectives were set for 177 specific items. BSC's accomplishments in meeting
objectives for 2000 can be downloaded as a PDF file

Some of the highlights of the year included:

design development phase of architectural planning;
- Hiring a new Atlantic Programs Manager; Senior Scientist – National Data
Centre, and Financial Controller;
- Improving French language services for participants in Project FeederWatch
and Christmas Bird Counts;
- Completing a scientific review of Long Point programs;
- Concluding an agreement with the National Audubon Society for the management
of Christmas Bird Counts in Canada;
- Completing essential upgrades on the farmhouse located on the headquarters
site and making good progress with site restoration and interpretation;
- Maintaining an active role in the North American Bird Conservation
Initiative;
- Holding a highly successful meeting of coordinators of regional nest recordschemes;
- Working with 2 PhD, 2 MSc and several undergraduate students; and
- Revamping our web site and adding new web features (downloadable BSC
reports, Bird Links to the World) that greatly increased visitation to and
utility of the site.
