Canada, a partner in NABCI, will be using BCRs as a spatial framework for bird conservation for the next three years, at which point the system will be re-evaluated and adapted as required. For more information on the ecological features of Canadian BCRs, click on a BCR of interest on the map.

Note for GIS users:

A compressed ArcInfo export file of North American BCRs  is available for downloading (approx. 5 MB). This file is compatible with ArcInfo and ArcView (as well as other GIS programs supporting the e00 format). ArcView users should use the Import71 utility that is packaged with ArcView to access the BCR coverage. The coverage is stored in geographic coordinates. Click here to download an ArcInfo projection file containing the parameters required to transform the BCR coverage from geographic coordinates to projected coordinates (Lambert Equal Area Azimuthal projection). The Lambert projection was used in the maps shown here because it preserves shape and area properties for features covering large expanses of latitude, e.g., North America. This projection is recommended for calculating area measurements, e.g., BCR area, provincial area.
