To love loons is to love the natural world, ... to care about the fate of loons is to also be concerned about their habitats and the other wildlife that share them. |

| Concern about the effects of acid rain and other human disturbances on loons led to
the creation of the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey (CLLS). The CLLS is a long-term project designed to monitor the numbers and breeding success of loons on lakes across Canada. Our goal is to preserve loons by increasing our understanding of loons and of human impact on them. Our success in achieving these goals depends entirely upon the work of volunteer surveyors. What do I do?Taking part in the Survey is a good way to do something positive for loons while you enjoy watching them. All we ask is that you try to survey a lake at least three times over the summer...
We provide a survey kit and detailed instructions that tell you exactly what to do. You are free to decide which lake(s) you wish to survey; even lakes without loons provide valuable information, since we want to determine those factors that might exclude loons from an area. The Survey includes a questionnaire which will allow us to assess factors affecting loons in Canada including the effects of water level changes, artificial nesting platforms and recreational use of personal watercraft (jetskis) on the breeding success of loons. What happens with the results? The results of volunteers' efforts are used in many ways. We give volunteers feedback regularly in BirdWatch Canada, the newsletter of Bird Studies Canada. Results are also published in scientific reports and presented at conferences where they can have an impact on loon conservation. Many Survey volunteers contribute to loon conservation in other ways as well: by taking water samples from lakes, by submitting loon carcasses and unhatched eggs for analysis, by posting CLLS educational signs, and by making floating nest platforms according to plans distributed by the CLLS. Is there a fee to participate? The CLLS is a project of Bird Studies Canada, a non-government, non-profit organization. To help offset the costs of the Survey, we ask for a $35.00 tax-creditable fee from CLLS volunteers. These contributions provide about 30% of the CLLS annual budget, and directly support the costs of servicing CLLS vlounteers. Can I help in other ways?If you can't survey a lake but would like to support the Survey and receive the BirdWatch Canada newsletter, you can do so by returning the registration form along with a tax-creditable donation. |
